Planned EU Requirements for Tires Would Reduce Road Traffic Safety

Continental advocates consumer-friendly and all-inclusive labeling

Hanover, November 12, 2007. By means of various regulations, the EU intends to reduce both CO2 emissions and noise pollution from road traffic in the future. Also under discussion in this regard is an “environmental label" aimed at informing consumers about tire rolling resistance. Likewise planned is a new requirement for reducing tire/road noise. Realization of both targets in the scope envisioned by the EU would entail, at the same time, considerably compromising a tire’s performance in terms of road safety.

“We, too, are very much endeavored to effecting a continued and sustained improvement in the environmental compatibility of our products. Nonetheless, we explicitly advise against any one-sided approach at the expense of safety," said Manfred Wennemer, Executive Board chairman of Continental AG in Hanover. “A good tire has to be balanced, i.e. alongside other properties it must also offer the lowest possible rolling resistance and, at the same time, good braking properties. Anything else would represent a marked setback in terms of road safety. Not only motorists but also kids out at play, pedestrians and cyclists would also suffer in this case. What is more, a development in this direction would run counter to the European Road Safety Charter, in which the EU has committed itself to halving the number of traffic fatalities to 25,000 by 2010. That should, however, remain the overriding objective.

Nowadays, even manufacturers without wide-ranging technical know-how are capable of designing tires specifically for low-rolling resistance. At the same time, such products exhibit, however, much poor braking on wet roads. Current ADAC winter tire tests indicate that even quality products designed expressly for extremely low-rolling resistance and high mileage perform ten percent poorer in terms of wet braking than tires with good all-round properties. Editors of the German magazines "auto motor und sport", "AutoBild" and "Stiftung Warentest", for example, came to similar conclusions. Their test parameters are set in such a way as to provide the most balanced possible assessment of safety and environmental aspects.

“In the case of these test results we talk about eight-meter-longer braking distances for a vehicle operating at a speed of 100 km/h. At the time of a potential crash, a vehicle whose tires were designed solely with low rolling resistance in mind and thus exhibit poorer braking, still has a residual speed of 35 km/h at the moment when the vehicle with balanced tires has already come to a stop,” underscored Wennemer. For this reason experts are highly critical of a one-sided “tire rolling resistance label“. According to experts – including the ADAC, for example – braking performance should definitely also be included in consumer information and, at the same time, indicated on a corresponding label.

“New, really clear labeling would have the advantage of truly giving the motorist a choice. At the same time, it would warn against fitting tires with poor handling properties. Labeling like that is the very least that we would want to see in terms of consumer education,” said Wennemer. The ADAC and ETRMA, the umbrella organization for European tire manufacturers, for example, also back this recommendation. One-dimensional labeling of the kind that may make sense in the case of refrigerators, in no way reflects the complexity of high-tech products like tires.

The basic problem is that of conflicting goals in the case of tire design, something both consumers and lawmakers are little aware of. Because of the laws of physics and chemistry, a tire is always something of a compromise in terms of its design and the compound used. It can’t provide super braking on wet roads, hold out for the life of the vehicle, generate virtually no noise and on top of all that have low rolling resistance so low as to render the vehicle maximally fuel-efficient with more or less zero CO2 emissions. Improving one property too much automatically means that compromises have to be made with at least one other requirement,” explains Dr. Burkhard Wies, Head of Passenger Tire Development at Continental. “There is a similar problem in the case of noise buildup. Minimal tread pattern means minimal noise buildup. A slick tire like those used in Formula 1 would represent the absolute epitome. This is not an option for normal everyday cars, of course. A tire like this has extremely poor braking qualities in the wet; its hydroplaning properties would also be completely unacceptable," continuing Dr. Wies.

On city streets it’s not tires that account for most of the traffic noise, which is due to engines revving up when the vehicle takes off, squealing brakes and other sources, such as manhole covers or road markings. At speeds of between 60 and 100 km/h, on the other hand, tires emit the most noise. At speeds of over 100 km/h vehicle body wind noise is the main culprit. “We know that in any case, the European tire industry in particular already offers very quiet tires. If all tires – even cheap imports – were just as quiet as those sold by quality manufacturers, much would already be achieved,” added Dr. Wies in closing.

The Continental Corporation is a leading automotive supplier of brake systems, chassis components, vehicle electronics, tires and technical elastomers.

All 2006 FIFA World Cup™ team vehicles to be equipped with Continental coach tyres

Hanover, June 2006. The final round draw for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ was held in the World Cup city of Leipzig in December 2005, dividing the 32 qualifying teams into eight groups. The opening game between Germany and Costa Rica will be played in Munich’s FIFA World Cup™ stadium on June 9th, with the final taking place in Berlin’s Olympic stadium exactly one month later. In all, the teams will play in 12 cities across Germany, incurring considerable travelling time for the players. Since the teams’ preferred mode of transport between match locations is coach, Continental Truck Tyres has taken the opportunity to combine its passion for sport with its enthusiasm for innovation, and develop a tyre with specially-designed sidewalls to mark the event.

Based technically on the HSL1 steer-axle tyre, the 295/80 R 22.5 HSL1 coach tyre sports stylised football emblems and distinctive yellow Continental logos moulded into the sidewalls. But the benefits of the 295/80 R 22.5 HSL1 coach tyre go much further than skin-deep. Specially-developed groove geometry ensures exceptionally low tyre noise, while its wide footprint generates a particularly uniform contact pattern. The importance of tyres is often underestimated, but they are the only connection between vehicle and road; these features will help to ensure that the world’s best football players travel in comfort and arrive safely at the different match venues. For the coach operator, there is an additional advantage – the HSL1 tyre exhibits very low rolling resistance, which translates to outstanding fuel economy.

"We received very positive feedback from the drivers of the eight team coaches that were fitted with our special edition HSL1 tyre for the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup Germany," explained Irmgard Matzke, responsible for global marketing communications in the commercial vehicle tyre sector at Continental. "As a result, all 32 of the Setra S 415 GT-HD and Mercedes Travego 2 team coaches for 2006 FIFA World Cup™ will be equipped with Continental HSL1 or HSR1 tyres."

"As true fans of both road transport and football, all of us at Continental are very excited about our involvement in the 2006 FIFA World Cup™," commented Ralf Hoffmann, brand manager for the passenger car and light truck tyre segment at Continental in Hanover. "Continental is one of just three German Official Partners of the event – and of these it is the sole representative of the automotive industry. This provides us with an excellent opportunity to present our company and products to a global audience, while at the same time demonstrating our passion and enthusiasm for sport."

Continental offers comprehensive information about the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ at www.contisoccerworld.com, including detailed portraits of all 32 teams and their stars, exclusive interviews and reports, plus further news of Continental Corporation’s football-related activities.

About Continental Truck Tyres, Europe

The Continental Corporation is a leading supplier of brake systems, chassis components, vehicle electronics, tyres and technical elastomers.

"This shareholding enables us to expand our existing joint venture with the Matador Group in the field of truck tires. At the same time we are significantly strengthening our production and operations base in central and eastern Europe and making lasting investments here" explained Manfred Wennemer, Chairman of the Executive Board of Continental. The newly-founded company is to remain a legally independent unit with sole responsibility for it’s business.

The CEO of the Matador Group Dr. Štefan Rosina said: “We have been looking for a strategic partnership for our Passenger and Light Truck tire business very seriously. Therefore I´m glad that all conditions of this strategic alliance were successfully carried out and I am sure that this joint venture with Continental will give a new future to our tire business. We will remain in this joint venture company as an important shareholder and this will enables us to strengthen our position in the Automotive sector - our new strategic business for the Matador brand“.

"The Matador brand management will remain solely responsible for the Matador brand. Extensive know-how in the field of tire development and production, plus the special aspects of the central and eastern European markets, put Continental Matador Rubber s.r.o in a very advantageous starting position.

"Matador provides an excellent customer base, particularly in central and eastern Europe. With the high level of expertise and motivation among our new colleagues in Puchov, we will be able to defend our newly-acquired position as the clear No. 1 in this region over the long term", Wennemer added.

“Our strategy is to create a service center for our worldwide tire research and development as well as tire testing at Puchov to further increase our efficiency. Therefore the product development of selected product segments will be transfered to Puchov”, Wennemer amended. The integration of Continental Matador Rubber`s tire research and development capacities into the global structures of Continental`s PLT tire division will also help to achieve the current growth targets. Continental's global production standards will be introduced at the Puchov site and production capacity gradually extended to over seven million car tires. This will involve an investment volume of more than €25 million by 2009. If the regional support and competetiveness of the plant is positive, substantially greater investment in the production site at Puchov to increase the tire production volume per year up to 16 million is conceivable. The Puchov plant will become part of the Continental worldwide production system and compared to all other plants in the world. Continental and Matador have already co-operated successfully since 1998 in a joint venture to produce truck tires in Puchov, with a 76% and 24% share respectively.

The participation will also mean that Matador's rubber processing equipment business unit, which produces machines for the tire industry and employs around 250 people at the Puchov site, is integrated into Continental's Mould and Machine Factory (FMF), constituting a second foothold. The design and production facilities already available in Slovakia constitute an ideal complement to FMF's strategy. Further synergies will be achieved in the fields of distribution and purchasing.

"The acquisition of Matador's conveyor belt section will also strengthen our business unit ContiTech Conveyor Belt Group in central and eastern Europe. This gives us wider access to the markets there", Wennemer went on to explain. Matador is very well placed in eastern Europe with the company's 160 employees in Slovakia who are producing conveyor belts. The Matador brand will continue to be manufactured at the Puchov site.

The Continental Corporation is a leading automotive supplier of brake systems, chassis components, vehicle electronics, tires and technical elastomers. On July 17, the tuning company motoren technik mayer (mtm) in Wettstetten near Ingolstadt set a new speed record of 393 km/h on the high-speed test track in Papenburg. In doing so, the roughly 735 kW (1000 HP) two-engined Bimoto Audi TT, following preparatory test runs, was fitted with the world’s fastest production tyre, the ContiSportContact Vmax. After the successful trial, both mtm and Continental are confident of being within striking distance of exceeding the 400-km/h mark with a sports car with combustion engine.

mtm had actually come to Papenburg for the sole purpose of preparing a series of record runs scheduled to take place in Nardó in southern Italy in October. The record-setting 393 km/h was achieved already in the day’s first test drive with Florian Gruber at the wheel at 7.25 a.m. This is the highest speed ever attained with the ContiSportContact Vmax under test conditions.

Prior to the test drive, mtm owner Roland Meyer had conducted tests with other tyremakers to settle on the right high-speed tyre. Summarising the test results, he noted that: "At the high speed attained by the Bimoto, the ContiSportContact Vmax displays distinctively good driving stability."

Under controlled test conditions it can, however, be subjected to even higher stress levels. For that reason, technical staff from Continental headed to Papenburg for the record run. The ContiSportContact Vmax has been developed primarily for ultrafast super sports cars and high-tech tuning vehicles. It was recently entered in the Guinness World Records as the world’s fastest production tyre.

The Continental Corporation is a leading automotive supplier of tyres, brake systems, chassis components, vehicle electronics and technical elastomers.
Continental University Campus in Calamba Officially Opened

In cooperation with Don Bosco College, Continental improves employee training at Continental Temic Electronics in Calamba

Calamba/Hanover, October 2007. Continental AG has established the Continental University Campus Calamba at their Calamba plant in the Philippines, in cooperation with the Don Bosco College. After Manila, the campus is the international automotive supplier’s second Continental University in the Philippines, and one of seven campuses currently established worldwide.

"Excellent education and training are essential to company success, particularly in high-tech companies," remarked Continental Human Resources Director Heinz-Gerhard Wente at the opening ceremony in the Don Bosco College facilities, Calamba. "With the aid of the Continental University, we will definitely continue increasing productivity and quality at the Calamba unit."

Continental's Universities aim at providing a broad range of in-depth qualification and support measures for employees without a university degree. This enables employees to maximize their personal potential, with the associated increase in productivity helping them to make an even greater contribution to reaching company goals.

The Continental University is available to any of the 463 employees of Continental Temic Electronics in Calamba who are willing to show initiative and interest in lifelong learning. In cooperation with the Don Bosco College, students are taught specialized subjects related to industrial automation. The opening of Continental’s Asia headquarters in Shanghai will bring Continental’s product and service offering even closer to its customers in the region.

Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, President of Continental Automotive Systems and Member of the Executive Board, Continental AG, gave great credit to Asian automobile manufacturers as a key driver for Continental’s Shanghai move: “They have the highest growth rates -including in the US and Europe. By expanding our regional business in Asia, we are paying tribute to their success. And as their partner in success, our development know-how and our manufacturing expertise must be located in the region with the customer.”

Continental’s Asian presence includes its Automotive Systems, Continental Tires and ContiTech divisions, which focus on auto electronics, tires and rubber and plastics technology respectively.

Continental Automotive Systems, the largest division of the Continental Corporation, has already been well positioned in Asia. The division intends to generate at least 50 percent of its new sales through agreements with non-European automobile manufacturers by the year 2010. Sales in Asia will double by that time.

“Presently, Continental Automotive Systems generates € 500 million in sales annually in the Asian region with all the well-known Asian automobile manufacturers. By 2010, we want to double this figure to € 1 billion,” said Jay Kunkel, President of the Asia Region at Continental Automotive Systems, as he described the company’s strategic growth target. “We want to support our customers in the best way possible. This includes a local presence and a clear commitment to the development and production sites of our customers everywhere in the world.
Swiss court reinforces importance of safety in road traffic:

Insufficient tyre tread depth can cost you your driving licence.

Hanover / Dietikon, 13th August 2007. A Swiss motorist who was caught by the Swiss police with insufficient tread depth on his car tyres has been banned from driving for a month, following the decision of the federal court in Lausanne. This ruling by Switzerland's highest judges corrected a lighter sentence made earlier by an administrative court, deciding in favour of clear punishment in the case of unsafe tyres on vehicles.

At the hearing on 7th August, the court was told about a commercial driver who had been stopped in May last year in the course of a police check in wet, rainy weather. The tread depth on the motorist's tyres was in part below the minimum specified limit of 1.6mm. According to the federal judges, this was something the driver would have been able to see and he should have replaced the tyres. Driving around with worn tyres was considered to be a moderately serious offence, as it posed a danger to others.

In the rain, tyres with insufficient tread depth are unable to adequately disperse the water from the ground contact patch and therefore tend to aquaplane as well as to require longer braking distances in the wet. Tyre experts, like the ones working for Germany's leading tyre manufacturer Continental, therefore recommend already switching to new summer tyres as soon as the tread depth goes down to three millimetres. Only then can tyres provide adequate safety on wet roads. They also warn that at the same time motorists need to adapt their speed to suit the driving conditions.

The Continental Corporation is a leading automotive supplier of tyres, brake systems, chassis components, vehicle electronics and technical elastomers. In 2006 the corporation realised sales of EUR14.9 billion. It currently has a worldwide workforce of around 89,000.

The tyre divisions are an Official Sponsor of UEFA EURO 2008TM, which will be held in Austria and Switzerland in June 2008. Automotive supplier profits from outstanding competence and extensive product portfolio in the key areas of safety, climate protection and infotainment

Intensive preparations underway for integration after closing

Wennemer: Cash flow in 2009 expected to exceed €1 billion

Frankfurt/Hanover, September 12, 2007. By purchasing Siemens VDO, Continental AG, Hanover, will profit from key automotive industry trends to a greater degree in the future. "The perspectives for the industry as shown at the IAA 2007 clearly confirm our view that the prevailing topics in the years to come will be safety, climate protection, and infotainment. With the consolidated innovative prowess and the extensive product portfolio of Continental and Siemens VDO, we feel we are excellently positioned as a systems specialist," said Manfred Wennemer, chairman of the Continental Executive Board, at the International Motor Show on Wednesday in Frankfurt/Main.

Wennemer pointed out that the antitrust authorities must still approve the acquisition of Siemens VDO. The decision is expected by the end of the year. Parallel to the ongoing approval process, Continental is planning intensively for the integration of Siemens VDO. "Antitrust regulations do set rather tight restrictions for us until closing, but within this legal framework, we are reacting quickly and precisely. For instance, we have determined the future corporate structures, which provide for three divisions: Chassis and Safety, Powertrain, and Interior in place of the current Automotive Systems division, in addition to the two tire divisions and ContiTech," said Wennemer.

"At the same time, we are working on implementing the financing firmly agreed upon with the banks for a volume of €13.5 billion, and we assume that a consortium will have been formed by early October. In addition to an €11 billion fixed loan, the banks are granting a revolving credit line of €2.5 billion, which ensures us sufficient latitude to maneuver," Wennemer explained. He pointed out that the company is expecting a cash flow of more than one billion euros starting in 2009, stressing that Siemens VDO will make a positive contribution to earnings already in 2008 - before integration and restructuring cost, depreciation and amortization.

Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, Executive Board member responsible for the Automotive Systems division and technological development, stressed the role of Continental as integrated systems supplier: "We will be able to generate a huge driving force for customer-oriented innovations, especially in the mega-trends areas of safety, reduction of CO2 emissions and infotainment. The technology exhibited at the IAA underscores the market opportunity for environmentally-friendly powertrain systems that address market demand for emission reductions and fuel economy improvements - in conventional gasoline and diesel engines, hybrid technology and ultra-energy-efficient battery systems. We can fulfill increasingly stringent consumption and emissions regulations around the globe as well as the wish of end users for safe, intelligent and dynamic vehicles that are also fun to drive," said Dr. Neumann.

The significant market demand for environmentally-friendly vehicles is just as great for active and passive safety systems: "Here too, increasingly comprehensive statutory regulations together with the demands of motorists worldwide will ensure growth in our core competence areas," Dr. Neumann stressed. "In recent years, European crash statistics have improved significantly, due to the development and use of seat belts, airbags and ESC. New active and passive safety systems when integrated with telematics are the next major step in further reducing deaths and injuries on our highways. In addition to the consumer's desire for safety, through integrated telematics we can also cater to their desire to integrate their portable devices, such as iPods into the car via interfaces from the world of PCs. This opens up the path for the devices we are familiar with today as well as for future products and developments."

Dr. Neumann also pointed out that the demand for affordable cars will experience double-digit growth worldwide in the next few years. "We will be dealing more intensively with the 'low-cost' car segment in markets such as China, India and Brazil. We refer to them as affordable cars, as that better represents the needs we are addressing. It is clearly a matter of using and demonstrating our technological expertise at both ends of the scale. Our products also must ensure high safety and comfort standards for affordable cars. 'Low-cost' should not be interpreted to mean 'low-tech' or 'inadequate safety' on the contrary!"

The Continental Corporation is a leading automotive supplier of brake systems, chassis components, vehicle electronics, tires and technical elastomers. In 2006 the corporation realized sales of EUR 14.9 billion. At present it has a worldwide workforce of around 89,000.
