Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA—Mission Statement
We are more than ever connected globally through our economic and production systems. Only international networks of knowledge and innovation will ensure that the major challenges of the 21th century will be successfully solved and new advancements in science and technology will sustain and increase the standard of living around the world.
At MIT we believe that a first-rate education of future engineers and scientists will play a crucial role in facing those challenges with optimism and confidence. The Conti Study on "Global Engineering" offers an attractive platform to discuss the current state and future trends of engineering education in an international setting. While educational practices are rooted in a country's culture and history, all participating universities share a number of key questions and concerns. The "Global Engineering Study" will bring premier universities from different continents into an intensive dialogue to take stock of their current activities and to identify best-practice models. Excellence in engineering education and practice requires the dialogue between university partners around the world, but equally important is a close interaction with a corporate environment that both values and relies on constant technical innovation. Continental embodies such a corporate culture and we are delighted to cooperate with them in this study.
