Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), founded in 1896, is one of the oldest universities in China. It has 2,800 faculty members; among them there are 22 academics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. The total enrollments in SJTU are about 40,000, including 20,000 undergraduate students, 12,000 graduate students, and 7,000 professional students. There are currently about 2,000 foreign students studying in the university, including about 500 in undergraduate programs and 100 in graduate programs.

SJTU is one of the top universities in China. It is among the top seven universities receiving a large amount of extra financial support from the “211 Project” and “985 Project” initiated by the Chinese governments. It is regularly ranked in the top seven by various ranking organizations of China. SJTU is strong in engineering, medicine and business, many of the academic programs are ranked as the national top three. Its engineering programs cover almost all major engineering fields, about 40 percent of its students registering in engineering programs.

SJTU has been making significant contributions to science and technology; its R&D funding from various sources is over 1 billion RMB (about 100 million euros) in 2004, the third highest among Chinese universities. SJTU contributes to the development of national and local economy by technology transfer and consultation. It has several hundreds of collaborative research projects with major industries. It files several hundred patents every year. In addition, university-run high-tech businesses have been growing rapidly.

Located in one of the major international metropolitan areas, SJTU has been actively involved in international exchange and cooperation. It has established cooperative relations with more than 100 universities abroad. It has some of the best dual degree programs with its international partners, such as the dual degree engineering programs with University of Michigan. It has set up joint laboratories with dozens of large international companies such as GM, Bell, and Ford, etc.

With its long-term goal of becoming a world-class university, SJTU is making special efforts in improving the quality of faculty, research, and graduate education. Internationalization has become one of its major strategies in the next five years. It is also emphasizing on contribution to the development of economy and society, particularly on collaborations with industries and technology transfer.
